Made from high‑grade 304 stainless steel, this queen isolation cage is built to withstand years of hive use while resisting rust and corrosion
It’s designed to hold a single full‑depth Langstroth frame with either 33 mm or 35 mm end bars.
Key Uses
Queen Rearing
Ideal for queen breeders who need precise control over brood age for grafting, helping to improve the consistency and quality of raised queens.
Winter Management in Warmer Climates
Useful where colonies continue breeding through winter. By restricting the queen to one frame, overall brood volume is reduced, which:
- Limits varroa reproduction opportunities
- Lowers the colony’s winter food demand
Spring Swarm Control
Caging the queen at strategic times can slow rapid colony expansion, allowing you to time peak population with the start of the honey flow and reduce the risk of pre‑flow swarming.
Varroa Control – Brood Break Method
The cage enables a controlled brood break so that almost all mites are on adult bees when you treat. A typical procedure:
1. Place a clean, empty drawn brood frame inside the cage.
2. Locate the queen and confine her within the cage on that frame.
3. Insert the caged frame into the centre of the brood nest.
4. A productive queen will usually fill most cells on that frame within about 2 days.
5. After 26–28 days (or 23–25 days if there is no drone brood), nearly all capped brood outside the cage will have emerged, leaving almost all mites exposed on adult bees.
6. When desired, return the framed brood and queen to the main brood area.
7. The cage can then be removed from the hive or left in place at the side of the brood box with a food frame inside until needed again.
Many beekeepers mark their queens to make them quicker to find when caging is required. The small amount of extra time spent marking and caging is minor compared with the cost of losing colonies to varroa.
